Learner-interface interaction in distance learning
LEARNER-INTERFACE INTERACTION refers to how the learner uses the computer interface to access and participate in instruction and communicate with instructors and other learners. The computer interface includes the graphical user interface (GUI), program instructions and help menus, and computer peripherals. Good learner-interface interaction allows the learner to focus on learning and communication rather than how to access instructional content and communicate with others (Lohr, 2000).

Affect on other types of interaction
Good learner-interface interaction is essential to successful interaction with content, teacher, and classmates in a distance learning environment. Virtually all communication with instructors and other students requires the learner to interact with their computer interface.
In the following animation, move your mouse over the image at random to read about different elements of learner-interface interaction.-
Learner variables
- native language
- prior computer experience
- expectations of interface
- physical handicaps
- amount of available learner time for interaction
-
Other variables
- learner’s computer system
- learner’s browser and other software
- complexity of programs
-
Design of interface
Good learner-interface interaction can be promoted by good GUI design. Some principles of good GUI are:
- avoiding jargon unfamiliar to your audience
- using clear, concise instructions
- using consistent navigation, color, and formatting
- adhering to principles of alignment and proximity
- maintaining learner orientation by use of tools such as site maps and accessible navigation buttons
- avoiding use of unnecessary graphics and content
-
Good and bad interface interaction
Bad learner-interface interaction distracts the learner from accessing content and communicating with others. Good learner interface interaction is transparent and allows the learner to concentrate on interacting with content, teachers, and other learners.
