Unit 5 what does she do?
文化目标:了解英语中职业名称对于不同性别的差异。
拓展阅读1:
There is no strict(严格的) gender(性别) differences(区别) in Chinese professional name(职业名称), such as doctors, drivers, singer, worker, if we want to distinguish(区分) the gender of them, we can add a word of gender "male" or "female" in front of the name, such as "female police, a policeman".
In English, some professional name also have no strict distinction, such as: doctor, the teacher, driver, etc. But some professional names have different names due to the different gender, such as actor and actress, actor is a man, but actress is a woman; and policeman means a police is a man, policewoman means a police is a woman; so a salesman refers(指的是) to a man, a saleswoman is referring to a woman. A mailman refers to a man, and a mailperson generally(一般来说) refers to a female postman, rather than a mailwoman.
There are other names like these.
For example:
Male——female:
waiter——waitress 服务员
Hero_Heroine 女英雄
拓展阅读2:
In English word, some words ended(结尾) with - ar, - or, and - er, these words were used in calling the occupation(职业) of men and women originally(本来), but in some terms of occupations, identities(身份) and parts of the nouns(名词) are distinguished(区别) between men and women by the suffix(后缀).
Such as:
words ended with- ess used for female. It is generally believed that word ended with - ess suffix expresses a negative(否定) connotation(内涵). In most cases, these words are added to some male words or some did not show that gender words. such as, tailoress, waitress.
(2) words ended with – ette used for female. With close links to the - ess suffix another suffix is - ette, feminists have long opposed the use of - ette as a suffix to represent the women, because the suffixes clearly contain "small" and "shallow" meaning.
